A surprisingly emotional story of a tiny little mouse fighting for survival in a harsh winter, wrapped up in a cute art style and cosy vibes.

A courageous mouse prepares for an adventure into a snowy woodland, carrying supplies, as a large insect lurks nearby.

In a delightful winter scene, a small figure makes their way through the snow, encircled by fallen leaves and leafless trees.

What is it about?

Imagine being a tiny woodland mouse. You are dragged into the city by your parents to live a better life, only to return to the woods and discover that a) your auntie left your house to rot and b) it is bloody freezing out there!

You explore the areas, get materials and meet creatures. They usually send you on a fetch quest and then you move on. The survival element of the game is all about managing your health, temperature, stamina and hunger. I would say it is the definition of cosy survival because it didn't feel punishing for the most part and the gameplay didn't revolve around "how do I make it through another day/night".

You slowly fix up your house, make friends and progress the main story. After you are done with the main story, you are free to explore further and finish up whatever exploration or crafting you want to.

Originality and overall vibes: ☃️☃️☃️☃️ out of 5

While the idea of the game (go outside, gather materials, craft, explore, fight...) is not anything groundbreaking and new, Winter Burrow put an interesting spin on it. Being a little mouse in a big world was occasionally terrifying (as it should be), the world was however, charming, and the game didn't overstay its welcome. The originality and vibes are strongly carried by the visuals, so I can't really give it a full score.

Visuals and Style: ☃️☃️☃️☃️☃️ out of 5

Immaculate. Cute. Different. One of a kind. Adorable. Would have as a wallpaper.

Perfection.

Audio Design: ☃️☃️☃️☃️ out of 5

I have been listening to the soundtrack while writing this. It is okay. Well, no, actually it is quite good. Mostly uplifting and cosy. But it is not very memorable. I am giving the game 4 out of 5 because I loved the sound design of walking around, cutting wood, etc...

In the quiet of a snowy forest, surrounded by frosty branches and blanketed rocks, a mouse is figting two bugs.

Gameplay and Controls: ☃️☃️☃️ out of 5

So, listen (Poslouchej!) - the game loop is good. Fetch stuff, come back, something happens, nice. Progress! And as I said, you didn't need to repeat it too many times.

I wish there were options to change the controls, but even if I get past this, when the game was first released, it had no map. And it genuinely felt like a deal breaker. I was struggling to remember where I had already been and where I needed to go. There was no option to mark the locations of materials or enemies. This had a big impact on how punishing the survival was and it has happened to me that I was stuck somewhere and couldn't get warm in time. They added the map quite shortly after release and it is better. It is still not quite the map I would like, as it lacks quite a lot of detail, but it is there.

If you go into the game expecting a relaxing weekend playthrough in the winter wonderland, you will get exactly that. You can even spend another weekend just fiddling around with the furniture and crafting EVERYTHING. And that is satisfying.

Story: ☃️☃️☃️ and a bit out of 5

(no spoilers)

Most of the side characters had quite touching and emotional stories, so I wanted to learn more about them. The game didn't shy away from tougher topics and it also didn't feel forced. At the same time, the overall story was missing a little bit of something for me.

I made it out of the city. Okay, and?

I am helping all these other critters because?

All of it was easy to overlook because there were no choices or consequences and you were there for the ride and it was a pretty ride.

Value for Money: ☃️☃️☃️☃️☃️ out of 5

You are supporting a small studio, with a unique art style, and their first game was complete and original. What more do you want?

What I liked:
  • Visual style

  • The other characters and their stories

  • It was easy to feel immersed

  • Crafting and survival did not feel overwhelming

  • Developers listened to the feedback about the lack of a map

  • Cute Christmas update

What wasn't quite so good:
  • Initial lack of a map

  • No hints on where you can find certain materials

  • Repetitive style of quests

  • Limited guidance on where to go
